Marina High Beach Party's Road Trip to Laughlin, Nevada (June 2018)

Saturday, June 23rd - Friday, June 29th, 2018

A six (6) night and seven (7) day Laughlin, Nevada trip is now being planned for next summer for the Marina Beach Party group that is open to all class years, friends, and their family members. Guests can choose to spend a few nights during the weekend and a few nights during the week if they can't take that many days off from work during the week.

Most of us will be staying at the Harrah's Laughlin resort. Our discounted nightly room rates for the Marina High Alumni group are as low as just $30 per night. Two people might reserve a room with two queen beds at a cost of just $15 to $17 per person per night. Please visit our Facebook event page to learn more details about the group discount prices.

The most expensive rooms are obviously on Friday and Saturday nights. If you can only stay a few nights, then please select the dates that work best for you. There are flights into Bullhead City, Arizona directly across the river from the Phoenix International Airport.

Guest may consider booking rooms through discounted travel websites such as www.expedia.com at resorts such as Harrah's, The Laughlin Lodge, the Golden Nugget (these first three resorts are all next to one another on the south side of the hotel region on the river), at the Pioneer Hotel (an older hotel that is dog friendly with a dog beach), the Colorado Belle, at the beautiful newer Aquarius Hotel, or elsewhere. Most of us will probably be staying at Harrah's though.

Room are much more affordable in Laughlin during the week than on the weekends ($30 to $40 per night for a room at a hotel on the Colorado River; two guests in one room pay just $15 to $20/night). Guests may consider booking rooms with two queen beds and a rollaway for up to four or five people per room (less than $7 to $10 per night per person). Most rooms have free wireless and desks in them for people who need access to the internet. Weekend rates can be two to five times higher, depending upon the resort.

We have access to wave runner rentals that are priced as low as just over $12 per hour ($100 for 8 hours). It is much safer and more fun to ride wave runners on a less crowded river during the middle of the week than on a weekend day. We can take wave runner rides further south on the river to the beautiful beach at the Avi Resort as well as north up to the Davis Dam for exceptional photo and video opportunities.

We will organize daily optional activities somewhat akin to a cruise ship at the different resorts such as at Harrah's (best beach on the strip), the Laughlin River Lodge (an excellent new sports bar is there that is like a fancy Chuck E. Cheese's mixed with a casino), the Golden Nugget (multiple tasty restaurants and a fun nightclub with karaoke), the Riverside Hotel (great bingo hall and bowling alley), and at the Aquarius Hotel (nicest casino and pool) as well as cocktail cruises up and down the river.

We may organize a day at nearby Lake Mohave with boats and jet skis as well as explore the idea of a round-trip bus trip to the Grand Canyon, Las Vegas, or to the Hoover Dam if the prices are reasonable (all activities are optional). Many activities will be free to attend because we want this vacation to be as affordable and fun as possible.

*** The calendar of proposed daily events will be posted for the dates of Saturday (June 23rd), Sunday (June 24th), Monday (June 25th), Tuesday (June 26th), Wednesday (June 27th), and Thursday (June 28th) before our group gets to Laughlin. For anyone else arriving earlier on Friday (June 22nd), we will let you know about other Vikings' plans for that night so that you may connect with them.

We will keep you posted as we figure out the best options for our group. Laughlin is one of the best travel bargains in the U.S. that can be described as an "adult Disneyland on the river." Water Taxis are available to go up and down the river while we visit the resort hotels and there is a very nice River Walk region. It is about a 3 1/2 to 5-hour drive from most counties in Southern California.

Marina Beach Party Shuttle & Parking Information

On Saturday, July 29th, 2017, there will be a limousine shuttle option between the Harbour Rackhouse restaurant and bar in the Huntington Harbour Mall between the hours of 12 noon and 9 pm for Marina Beach Party guests. The suggested shuttle price per person is $3 one way and $5 round-trip.

It is about a one mile drive each way from the Huntington Harbour Mall to the PCH and Warner roundabout loop that is just 200 yards away from the Marina Beach Party site location and the Sea Legs at the Beach restaurant and bar near Lifeguard Tower #26. Sea Legs at the Beach opens up at the same 10 am time on that Saturday morning as when the Marina Beach Party begins.

The address for the Harbour Rackhouse (the old House of Brews location) is as follows: 16903 Algonquin St., Huntington Beach, CA 92649 (Phone # (714) 377 - 3893; email: hbrackhouse@gmail.com; Daily Hours: 11 am to 2 am - Monday through Sunday).

If you wish to park in the beach parking lot ($15+ per car and $30 for motorhomes or RVs), we suggest that you try to arrive sometime between the opening hours of 6 am and 11 am before the lot fills up. For guests bringing a motorhome or RV, we recommend that you arrive sometime between the hours of 6 am and 7 am to find a great spot near the beach party site.

Whether you walk, ride your bike, get dropped off, park in the beach lot, park off of Warner Avenue or somewhere else in Sunset Beach, take the bus, call Uber, or take the independently owned and professional limousine shuttle service from Harbour Rackhouse, we look forward to seeing you there. Please remember to NOT drink and drive!!!

In 2017, the Class Years of '67, '72, '77, '82, '87, and other years may be scheduling either mini-reunions or more formal events. If these class years plan on holding their individual class reunions within the Beach Party as either their main reunion event or as a portion of their weekend reunion event, please let us know so that we may coordinate and market the events together.

At the past Marina Beach Party gatherings, there were several hundred people in attendance throughout the day representing at least 30+ different class years.

PLEASE LOOK FOR THE BLUE AND YELLOW SURFBOARD, various tents, and Marina High signs and banners. *** Our Superstar Party DJ is Chris Twining (MHS '82) who plays music from the '60s, '70s, '80s, '90s, and the more modern eras.

PARKING INFORMATION: There is free parking north of Jack in the Box in Sunset Beach, and paid gated parking for $7.50 (disabled), $14 (senior), and $15 (general) in the adjacent lot several hundreds yards south. The earlier you arrive, the better the parking options will be on that same day.

ALL ALCOHOL must be hidden from view, and people must drink at their own risk on the beach. THIS EVENT IS 100% SOLO CUP FREE. Do not bring or use any Solo type plastic cups. Alcoholic beverages are illegal on all California State Beach Property as has been the case for a few decades. It is a ticketable offense, and the HB Beach Patrol did check last year. There are restaurants, bars, and hotels within a short walking distance of the party location which may be alternative options.

Please do not drink and drive, regardless!!! Each guest is responsible for their own actions if they decide to attend this free public event.

*** Please let us know if you are bringing a motorhome or RV so that we may try to line them up adjacent to the Beach Party site. The length limit for a motorhome or RV is 40 feet. Parking fees for motorhomes and RVs may vary between $22.50 and $30 (disable, senior, or general parking fees).

All former Marina High Alumni, family, and friends are invited. Once you receive this invitation, you may then forward to other Marina friends and family. We also welcome current and former Marina High staff.

There will be charcoal, foil, BBQ utensils and paper plates, silverware and napkins for your use as well as salt, pepper, mayo, ketchup, mustard and relish.

THE PARTY WILL BE POTLUCK FOR SIDE AND MAIN DISHES AND DESSERTS. Please bring a dish to share like potato & macaroni salads, pasta salads, green salads, pizza, fish tacos, kabobs, burgers, guacamole, fruits and veggies, chips & salsa, crackers, cookies, brownies, and other treats.

We also suggest that guests consider bringing chairs, portable stereos, towels, natural sunblock, hats, and fun things for the kids. Please remember to bring WARM clothes and blankets if you plan to stay for the bonfire since it may get cold when the sun goes down.
